Instantly recognisable, shipping containers are so common that most people don’t even notice them. Yet they are the unsung work horses of modern trade.
Conceived in the mid-20th century by American haulier Malcolm McLean, containerisation radically reduced dockside loading and unloading times. The standardised container design was the brainchild of Keith Tantlinger. He introduced a twist-lock mechanism, allowing each container to be safely stacked together and locked in place during transport.
Once the ISO had agreed on international standard sizes, McLean and Tantlinger’s system went from strenth to strength, and has transformed international goods transportation. Dock-yards and rail-yards around the world adapted to the new system. Container ships have become the giants of the ocean, with over 17 million containers currently in circulation.
Orlandoo have lovingly recreated every detail of the humble container in this kit, with etched metal parts used to replicate finer details. From the corrugated construction to the twistlock corners, the Orlandoo container is a masterclass in scale realism. All we need now is a 1/32 telehandler…
